World’s Highest Escalator is Suspended 550ft. Above Ground

Thirty-nine stories in the air, the glass-enclosed escalator at the Floating Garden Observatory in Osaka’s Umeda Sky Building is said to the Highest escalator in the World. Not for Acrophobics (People with the fear of heights). I read somewhere that Tobey Maguire, the lead actor of the Spider Man sequel is an Acrophobic himself!

Boblbee Solar Case Gives You Infinite Music

The Boblbee Solar is a weatherproof iPod case made for adventurers. Fully droppable and wettable, the Boblbee Solar can take its share of the hard knock life. But its real trick is a curved solar panel, making the most of surface area for a charge cycle that should be about 8 to 10 hours on a sunny day. Eight to 10 hours is not so bad, especially when you realize the iPod nano is rated for 24 hours of use.

In other words, the Boblbee could recharge the nano up to three times before your battery is able to drain once. And for those in the wilderness, the music never has to stop. Infinite playback without a wall socket? That’s incredible. The Boblbee Solar isn’t priced yet but is expected to hit the markets late this year.

Creative Writing Workshop @ BRAC University by Shamim Azad

http://thedailystar.net/campus/2007/08/02/feature_BRAC.htm

Shamim Azad is a poet who needs no introduction. Equally accomplished in both Bengali and English literature, she has been described as ‘one of Britain’s best-known Bangladeshi writers’ by

Sheffield’s Off the Shelf Festival of writing and reading in 2003. She has published seven books of her own ranging from novels, collection of short stories, essays and poems.

A performance poet and a story-teller, Shamim works with Apples & Snakes for education. ‘Performance Poet’ is a relatively new term in UK, but Shamim said that it has been present in Bengali cultures from very early times. She performed in places including Museum of London, Cambridge Water Stone, Liberty Radio, Battersea Arts Centre, Lauderdel House, Commonwealth Institute, British Council of Bangladesh, Takshila in Pakistan and New York. Her poems were included in few Anthologies including British South Asian Poetry, My Birth Was Not In Vain, Velocity, Emlit Project and Mother Tongues etc and published in a special issue of Newyorker USA. She wrote bilingual plays- The Raft and co-wrote Hopscotch Ghost for the Half Moon Theatre. Azad’s bilingual (English-Bangla) compilations and translations are Voyages and The Life of Mr. Aziz. She is also a trustee of well known charity One World Action, a school Governor and Chairperson of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro London. Azad received the Bichitra Award in 1994 from Bangladesh, Year of the Artist 2000 Award from London Arts, Sonjojon- A Rouf Award 2004 & Civic Awad in 2004 in UK.

A three week long Creative Writing Workshop was conducted at BRAC University on the last three Saturdays (21st and 28th July and 4th August) by the renowned poet Shamim Azad. Organized by the English Department of BRAC University, the two main organizers of this event were Nausheen Eusuf and Sohana Mansoor, Lecturers of the Department. Here, attendees of the workshop, comprising of both teachers and students got to practice on their creative writing skills and learnt techniques in which they could improvise on their future writings. The workshop constituted of various fun activities which finally worked as creative writing exercises at the same time.

One of the best part was a small game where participants had to start talking on a given topic and after a while random objects (unknown to the speaker beforehand) were passed on to the speaker who had to somehow incorporate that into his or her topic of discussion. It could be as irrelevant as a ‘hairbrush’ in a discussion of ‘Global Terrorism’, or a ‘candle’ on ‘Immigration’! The art lied in incorporating the object skillfully into the discussion without stopping for a single second. All the participants came up with some really ‘brilliant’ ideas during this game, much to the delight and applause of all others present.

The poet ended the workshop in a light mood telling all of us about a real life story of hers which is bitter yet sweet. Once, in England, she was visiting a graveyard with a group of other people. Trying to save one of her friends from slipping, she herself became subject to a big accident causing a fracture in one of her legs. As she sat there dumbstruck, people came close to her, offering help. Soon the paramedics arrived and a chopper too! They took her with utmost care, trying to avoid any further damage before she reached the hospital. Being in the centre of all this attention, she almost felt like a VIP and the delight was evident in her face! Her British friend, shocked at seeing her smiling face really couldn’t master up any reason as to why she seemed to be in such a good mood in spite of her leg fracture just a few minutes back! Later, one of her friends wrote to her, ‘Shamim, I heard that you had one foot in your grave!’

Shamim Azad is devoting her entire summer this year to different activities in Bangladesh with organizations like The British Council, Muktijudhho Jadughar and BRAC University. She’s also conducting story telling sessions for the specially needed children in M H Pre School in Banani.

On the 9th August, Thursday Shamim Azad has launched her book ‘Om’, which is a collection of Bengali poetries. This event was attended by renowned literary figures like Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor of English in Dhaka University, Poets Rafik Azad Tarik Sujat and Aditi Falgun. The poet is very excited about her new book since it is her first Bengali publication after a sixteen year gap. She hopes her readers will enjoy reading all the poems in the new book ‘Om’.

Star Campus – Our Experience : First Anniversary Special Issue

http://thedailystar.net/campus/2007/08/01/feature_experience.htm

…..

The first time I heard about Star Campus was during my stay in the USA last year. It was a completely new magazine from ‘The Daily Star’ and my father mentioned it over phone to me. I checked out the first few editions online and surely and inevitably fell instantly in love with it. After returning to Bangladesh in mid-August, I wrote my first article for Campus ‘SAUSLI 2006 An experience of a lifetime’. After that, I wrote many more articles, about events in my University (BRAC University), about the different Universities and Colleges in USA and various other topics.

Many months and many articles later, I was offered a job at Star Campus when a vacancy was created there. I gladly accepted, and from May 2007, became the Copy Editor of Star Campus which required me to edit the many different types of articles that came into Star Campus every day. Editing itself is a very thought-provoking job. The articles that come in have all sorts of qualities and all sorts of ideas. Bringing all of them to a standard version does get challenging at times. But I did not restrict myself to editing only, I started covering lots of events as well and that is where the main fun remains. Although my job does get very demanding at times, given the fact that I am a fourth year engineering student as well, I still love it because of the general working atmosphere and the wonderful people I work with. Shahnoor Wahid, the Star Campus Editor is almost like a father figure to me being a very good friend at the same time. He is always willing to understand and takes the pressure of me during my exams and projects at the university. I have excellent colleagues in the form of Feeda, Nazia, Towsif, Shayera, Saushan and Shagor. Although Shayera, Saushan and Towsif work in other sections of the newspaper, they do write in our magazine quite regularly and all of us have become good friends over time.

All in all, it’s a really wonderful experience working here at Campus, one that I will cherish forever. I wish Star Campus a very happy First Anniversary!
